Artist Statement

Mia Yoshihara-Bradshaw is a designer and self-taught paper cutting artist living in Seattle, Washington. She created her first paper cut kimono in 2005, soon after graduating with a BFA in design production from Western Washington University. Her early works were inspired by the beauty of Japanese kimonos and vibrancy of chiyogami paper.

Mia’s art combines elements of traditional Japanese paper-cutting (kiri-e), silhouettes and mixed-media collage. Similar to kiri-e, her process involves meticulous attention to detail. Utilizing a razor, silhouettes and patterns are carefully carved to define the form. The piece is then brought to life through a collage of chiyogami, ribbon and other materials.

Mia’s art has been included in group exhibitions in the Seattle area. Her work is available online and in local gallery gift shops.
